Five pesewa coins of Ghana’s new cedi, from the copper-coloured 1 pesewa with the Adomi Bridge to the 50 pesewas with a market woman. The series appeared in July 2007, when Ghana redenominated its currency and 10,000 old cedis became one new cedi.
Each coin has its own theme. The 1 pesewa shows the Adomi Bridge over the Volta River. The 5 pesewas has a Ghanaian man blowing a traditional horn, an image of music. The 10 pesewas carries an open book and pen, the symbol of education. The 20 pesewas features cocoa pods, the country’s main export crop. The 50 pesewas depicts a market woman. The other side of every coin bears the full national coat of arms.
The smallest coin, the copper-plated steel 1 pesewa, is dated 2007, the first year of the new cedi. The nickel-plated steel denominations were struck in later years as well, 2016 among them, so the set combines the opening date of the series with its continuation.
For a Ghana collection this is the complete run of third-cedi pesewa coins; for thematic collectors it offers a bridge, a musical instrument, a book, cocoa and a working woman on the coins of one country.
UNC: the coins never circulated, show no wear and keep their mint lustre.
