Germany, silver 20 euro 2017: the 300th anniversary of the birth of Johann Joachim Winckelmann.
The design shows Winckelmann’s head facing left above the years 1717-1768 and the artist’s mark AW, surrounded by 300. GEBURTSTAG JOHANN JOACHIM WINCKELMANN.
It was designed by Andre Witting. The smooth edge carries the incuse inscription EDLE EINFALT UND STILLE GRÖSSE (noble simplicity and quiet grandeur). According to the Bundesbank, the coin was issued on 12 October 2017 with a standard-strike mintage of 888,000. It was struck at the Stuttgart mint (mint mark F).
Since 2016 German 20 euro coins have been struck in sterling silver, 925 parts silver to 75 copper, weighing 18 g with a diameter of 32.5 mm. The other side shows the federal eagle, BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND, the value, the year, the mint mark, SILBER 925 and the twelve European stars. Uncirculated (UNC) grade means the coin never circulated: there is no wear and the original mint lustre is intact.
