Saint Mamas riding a lion, an image from an 11th-century gilded silver plaque from the Gelati Monastery, became the design of Georgia’s 10 tetri dated 1993.
According to tradition, the 3rd-century martyr Mamas was thrown to wild beasts but calmed them by preaching, and a lion stayed with him as a companion; ever since, the lion has been his attribute in iconography, and in Georgia he is known as Mamai. On the coin the rider on the lion fills the centre of the field, with the numeral 10 and the Georgian «თეთრი» on the right and a plant ornament around the edge. The other side carries the borjgali above the tree of life and the legends «საქართველოს რესპუბლიკა» and «REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA».
The steel coin entered circulation in 1995 with the introduction of the lari and is still in use. For collections of Christian art or lion themes, it is a circulating coin that reproduces a masterpiece of medieval metalwork.
Uncirculated (UNC): the coin has never circulated, the fine relief of the saint and the lion shows no wear, and the mint lustre is intact.
The VPcoins catalogue includes both modern commemorative issues and coins of past eras.
