In 2002 Elizabeth II celebrated her Golden Jubilee, fifty years since her accession, and the Falkland Islands marked it with a whole series of crown-sized 50 pence coins, each with its own subject and the shared inscription «THE GOLDEN JUBILEE».
This coin shows the royal crown beneath festive bunting — the central symbol of the monarchy and the most concise design in the series. The obverse carries Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of Elizabeth II with the legend «QUEEN ELIZABETH II · 2002 · FALKLAND ISLANDS · 50 PENCE» and the initials «RDM».
The series is extensive, ranging from the Gold State Coach and the orb and sceptre to the Commonwealth Games and the Thanksgiving Service; some coins were also issued with coloured bunting. This piece is the uncoloured variety, KM# 80.2, struck in copper-nickel.
Grade UNC: the coin has never circulated, shows no wear and keeps its mint lustre. A good starting point for assembling the Falklands jubilee series or a collection devoted to the reign of Elizabeth II.
