A farmer following a plough drawn by a team of oxen, and the motto ALIMENTOS PARA TODOS, «Food for All»: this is how Cuba responded to the 50th anniversary of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Above the ploughman are the FAO emblem and the dates 1945-1995.
FAO was founded on 16 October 1945 in Quebec City; its Latin motto fiat panis means «let there be bread», and its founding day is marked as World Food Day. The anniversary coin was part of an international coin programme honouring the organisation that helps countries fight hunger.
The reverse was engraved by Francisco Puen Ávila, and the obverse carries the Cuban arms with REPUBLICA DE CUBA. The mintage is 12,000. In an FAO collection the coin stands out for its plain, clear picture of farm work — ploughing with oxen rather than abstract symbolism.
Uncirculated (UNC) condition: the coin never circulated, shows no wear and retains its mint lustre.
A themed selection that includes this coin is easy to expand with other items from the VPcoins catalogue.
