The word «OBISPO» on this coloured 1994 peso is the Cuban name for the spotted eagle ray, a ray with a dark back covered in white spots and rings. The coin belongs to the first «Fauna del Caribe» series, Caribbean Fauna.
The reverse shows the ray swimming left, with «FAUNA DEL CARIBE - OBISPO» and the year around it; the image is by Alberto González Pereztol, and the reverse is coloured. The obverse bears the Cuban arms, the legend «REPUBLICA DE CUBA» and the denomination.
The spotted eagle ray lives in the Atlantic, including the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, and reaches a wingspan of up to three metres. It is easy to recognise by its flat, duck-bill-like snout, which it uses to dig in the sand for prey, and it is known for leaping out of the water. The IUCN lists the species as Near Threatened.
In the series the ray is joined by dolphins, groupers, a sailfish, a pelican and flamingos. According to the Cuban mint, the mintage was 10,000 pieces. The coin rounds out a marine life collection and a set of coloured coins.
Uncirculated (UNC): the coin never circulated, shows no wear and keeps its mint lustre and colour, so the spotted pattern on the ray’s back is clearly visible.
Besides this coin, VPcoins offers other issues from the same era and region.
