Turtles fed the Cayman Islands for centuries: in 1787 Captain Hull estimated that between 1,200 and 1,400 turtles a year were caught here and sold in Jamaican ports, and the 2013 10 cents pays tribute to that trade.
On the reverse a sea turtle rises to the surface as ripples spread across the water, next to the value and the initials «SD» of Stuart Devlin, who drew the scene for the first Cayman series of 1972. The obverse is Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth crowned portrait of Elizabeth II, signed «IRB».
Over time the fishery exhausted the local turtles, and islanders had to sail to other shores to find them; the coin keeps the memory of what was once the main occupation on Grand Cayman. It is struck by the Royal Mint in nickel-plated steel, adopted for the 10 cents in 1992.
Uncirculated (UNC): the coin never circulated, shows no wear and keeps its mint lustre. A natural choice for turtle and marine life collections and for a Cayman Islands date run.
Numismatics begins with a single coin and continues in the VPcoins catalogue.
