On the heptagonal 25 thebe the motto «IPELEGENG» — «rely on yourself» — moved from the obverse to the reverse, right beneath the zebu, and 2009 was the last year of this type.
On the reverse the humped bull stands facing left beneath «25 THEBE». Without the motto the obverse looks more restrained: just the arms with zebras holding an elephant tusk and a stalk of sorghum, the legends «BOTSWANA» and «PULA», and the date below. «PULA» means rain, the greatest blessing in a dry country and the source of the currency’s name.
The heptagonal nickel-plated steel 25 thebe was struck by the South African Mint from 1998 onwards. In 2014 the Bank of Botswana issued a new coin family, and the old coins were demonetised from 28 August 2014.
Grade UNC: never circulated, no wear, mint lustre preserved. The closing year of the type in this condition fits a date set as neatly as a thematic collection of farm animals on coins.
At VPcoins you will find coins for a collection, for a gift, or simply for the pleasure of owning them.
