The coin is struck in bimetal. It measures 25.75 mm in diameter, is 2.2 mm thick and weighs 8.5 g; the edge is reeded with an incuse inscription. The Royal Mint of Belgium in Brussels ceased striking in 2018, and Belgian euro coins have since been produced to order by mints of other euro-area countries.

Belgium is one of the founding members of the euro area: euro cash was introduced on 1 January 2002 at the rate of 40.3399 francs to the euro.
