The Dutch version of the last Belgian franc: «1 FRANK» and «BELGIË» on the reverse, King Albert II’s profile on the obverse.
The 1994 type came in two language versions, French with «1 FRANC BELGIQUE» and Dutch, struck side by side in equal numbers: in 1997 each version was issued in 95,060,000 pieces. At the lower right of the reverse are the mint mark and the mintmaster’s mark.
Jan Alfons Keustermans’ portrait of the king appears on the 1997 coin in its second, reduced form, introduced in 1996 in place of the larger head of 1994–1995.
These francs did not stay in circulation for long: at the changeover the franc was exchanged at 40.3399 to the euro, and on 28 February 2002 it lost its legal tender status.
Condition UNC: the coin never circulated, shows no wear and retains its mint lustre, with only minor handling marks possible. For a collection of the last francs before the euro, this is an example in the best circulation-strike condition, with the portrait and small marks free of rub.
