This ten brings together a medieval thinker and a late-twentieth-century political slogan. The front shows Ibn Khaldun (1332–1406), a native of Tunis and author of the Muqaddimah, regarded as one of the greatest social scientists of the Middle Ages and a forerunner of sociology and historiography.
Behind the portrait is the street where his house stood, and the watermark repeats the scholar’s portrait. The back shows an open book with the date 7 November 1987 and the words «Openness, Democracy, Rule of Law», surrounded by a mosaic of working life: a farmer on a tractor, a worker. On that day Prime Minister Zine El Abidine Ben Ali removed President Habib Bourguiba from power, and the note itself is dated 7 November 1994, the seventh anniversary of the event.
This example belongs to type P87; the catalogue also lists a variant of the same design, P87A. Ten-dinar notes of the 1994 type, like those of the 1986 and 2005 types, were accepted for exchange by the Central Bank of Tunisia until 31 December 2019.
In a Tunisian collection it is a Ben Ali-era note with overt political symbolism, and in a scholars-on-banknotes set it is the portrait of the author of the Muqaddimah. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
The VPcoins catalogue features banknotes from many countries, making it easy to build a collection by geography or by subject.
