Prince Ata launched Tonga's new family of notes at a National Reserve Bank event at the Fa'onelua Convention Centre in Nuku'alofa. The date carried meaning: 4 December 2023, the public holiday honouring King Tupou I.
Materials differ across the family. Polymer, a first for Tonga, was given to just two notes, the five and the ten; the remaining four values, this fifty among them, are still printed on a cotton base, with a switch to polymer only planned.
Counterfeiters face De La Rue's IGNITE micro-optic thread on the fifty: tilt the note and the image on it moves, while the value numeral is see-through. A further layer comes from ultraviolet features hidden on every note of the family.
For a Tonga collection, P54 is one of the paper values of a family still waiting to go polymer, and a natural companion to the plastic five and ten. Uncirculated, with no trace of handling.
