The 10 guilders dated 1 May 1994 belong to the first edition of the bird series that the Bank of the Netherlands Antilles launched in 1986, when Aruba left the Antilles. Its designs were created by the Curaçao artist Oscar Ravelo, and each denomination from 5 to 250 guilders received its own local bird.
The ten features the purple-throated carib hummingbird (Eulampis jugularis); the back carries the bank’s seal emblem, and the same emblem appears as a watermark when the note is held to the light. The note was printed by the Dutch firm Joh. Enschedé.
This note still has no gold foil: the bank introduced it only in 1998, when it strengthened the security features and issued the series in a second edition. That makes the 1986–1994 notes easy to tell apart from later ones with the same hummingbird.
In a Netherlands Antilles collection it represents the first edition of the bird series and pairs with the second-edition tens bearing gold foil; for a «birds on banknotes» theme it offers the hummingbird as drawn by Oscar Ravelo. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
Other banknotes of this country and issues on related themes can be found in the VPcoins catalogue.
