The new 20 dirhams came out on 21 August 2024, Youth Day, and its theme fits the occasion: culture, education and sport. The front shows, beside the portrait of Mohammed VI and the coat of arms, a stylised view of the University of al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, founded in 859 and regarded as one of the oldest operating universities in the world.
The back combines old and new: the Grand Theatre of Rabat, the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the stand of a sports complex and a stylised kasbah of Ait Benhaddou. The security thread changes colour with a dynamic effect, and an iridescent band runs across the back. Design and printing were carried out entirely at the Moroccan works Dar As-Sikkah.
The lowest denomination of the new series completes the set in a Morocco collection, and in an architecture set it links a medieval university, an earthen kasbah and Rabat’s newest buildings. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
A banknote from the VPcoins catalogue is a gift that is interesting to examine and has a story worth telling.
