Macau 5 Patacas 1981

The 5 pataca banknote was issued by the Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) on 8 August 1981. The 1981 series was an updated edition in which each denomination features different historical figures and landmarks on the obverse and a view of the 19th-century Praia Grande Bay on the reverse. The note was printed by Bradbury Wilkinson and Company in the United Kingdom.

The obverse depicts the Chinese A-Ma Temple, with inscriptions in Portuguese and Chinese: "BANCO NACIONAL ULTRAMARINO 大西洋銀行 MACAU CINCO PATACAS 伍圓". The reverse shows a view of Praia Grande Bay in the 19th century, with the BNU seal on the left and the inscription "BAÍA DA PRAIA GRANDE – SÉC. XIX".

Praia Grande Bay on the eastern side of the Macau Peninsula is considered the most frequently depicted view of 19th-century Macau and for many years was the city's foremost landmark. The A-Ma Temple is the oldest temple in Macau, dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu, and one of the symbols of the territory's Portuguese-Chinese cultural heritage. Notably, the very name "Macau" derives from this temple — in a distorted Portuguese transcription of "A-Ma Gao".
