Macau 10 Patacas 1977

The 10 pataca banknote was issued by the Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) in 1977 as a standard circulation banknote within the 1963–1977 series. It was printed by Bradbury Wilkinson and Company in the United Kingdom and has been graded 40 (Extremely Fine) by the grading company PMG.

The obverse features a portrait of Bishop Belchior Carneiro Leitão, the first Jesuit bishop of Macau, the BNU seal on the left, and the coat of arms of Portugal at the lower centre. Inscriptions in Portuguese and Chinese read: "BANCO NACIONAL ULTRAMARINO MACAU DEZ PATACAS". The reverse depicts an allegorical scene: a female figure on the shore against a backdrop of Portuguese sailing ships at anchor, and a circular BNU seal inscribed "LISBOA-1964".

The security feature is a solid security thread.

Bishop Belchior Carneiro (1516–1583) was the first Apostolic Vicar of China and Japan and the founder of the first hospital in Macau, playing a pivotal role in establishing the Portuguese presence in the territory. The allegorical female figure with sailing ships on the reverse evokes the era of Portuguese navigators, through whose voyages Macau became the most important trading port on the route between Europe and the Far East.
