Alfredo González Flores, born on 15 July 1877, led Costa Rica in 1914–1917 and tried to rebuild its finances: an inconvertible currency, control of gold, bond issues, the creation of banks, and land and income taxes. The reforms were cut short by a military coup: on 27 January 1917 power was seized by his own war minister, Federico Tinoco, and the president went into exile in the United States.
The back, captioned «Manglar», leads to the mangrove forests: they cover only about 1% of the country, yet serve as shelter and nursery for many marine animals, birds and mammals. On the note they are represented by a white-faced capuchin, a crab and mangrove flowers.
The paper 5,000 colones of this design was printed in two series: A, dated 2 September 2009, and B, dated 19 September 2012. Both lost legal-tender status from 1 March 2022, when they were replaced by a polymer note with the same hero and the same mangroves.
For a Costa Rica collection this is the later series B of the paper 5,000 colones, already withdrawn from circulation, and in a «primates on banknotes» set it is the capuchin among the mangroves. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
More banknotes from this country and this era are waiting in the VPcoins catalogue.
