On 5 December 2022 Barbados moved its money from paper to polymer for the first time in its history. The series, unveiled on 4 May that year, was only the second redesign of the national currency in almost half a century of the central bank’s existence. The notes were printed by De La Rue. In June 2023 the series was named «Best New Series» at the Reconnaissance International regional awards presented in Nassau.
The fifty-dollar note is devoted to Errol Barrow, who in 1955 became one of the founders of the Democratic Labour Party, led the country to independence and became the first Prime Minister of Barbados. The back shows Independence Square in Bridgetown, where his statue stands.
The central bank kept the same outstanding Barbadians and the same reverse scenes as in the 2013 series but presented them in a new way and added distinctly Bajan details: lines of the national anthem printed on the back glow under ultraviolet light, and each note carries a part of the island’s map, so that only all six denominations together form the whole of Barbados. The bank expects polymer notes to last two to three times longer than paper ones; the old paper money circulates alongside for a while but will eventually be phased out.
At the bottom of the note is a transparent window with an image echoing the reverse scene, here with a hologram that changes colour when tilted. In the upper right corner of the front, the denomination numeral appears within the broken-trident pattern when held up to the light, and the raised marks on the back form an L, a sign by which the note can be recognised by touch.
For a Barbados collection this is a denomination of the first polymer series, which won an international award, and for a «fathers of independence on banknotes» theme it pairs the first Prime Minister with Independence Square. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
Other paper money items from the same country or on the same theme are in the VPcoins catalogue.
