Just 5.4 million pieces: that is how many standard 50 cents the Royal Australian Mint struck in 2018. By comparison, 25.5 million were issued in 2016 and 17.6 million in 2012, so 2018 is noticeably leaner than the middle of the decade in a date run.
It is one of the final years of the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Elizabeth II: it appeared on Australian coins in 1999 and was replaced by the Jody Clark portrait in 2019. The reverse shows the Commonwealth coat of arms as rendered by Stuart Devlin, with the shield supported by a red kangaroo and an emu.
The arms were granted by George V in 1912. The shield carries the badges of the six states framed by wattle, and above it is a seven-pointed star: six points for the states and a seventh for the territories. The coin became twelve-sided in 1969 so that it would not be confused with the 20 cents.
Grade UNC: the coin has never circulated, shows no wear and keeps its mint lustre, with at most minor marks from storage in bags.
