A nurse in profile before a cross in a circle: the 2015 20 cents inscribed «WWI - NURSES» honours the women of the Australian Army Nursing Service who went through the First World War alongside the soldiers.
For service abroad, 2,861 women joined it. They worked in Belgium, Egypt, England, France, Greece and India, in hospitals, in casualty clearing stations close to the front line, and on hospital ships, trains and barges. Twenty-one of them died during their service or shortly after. In 1917 four nurses received the Military Medal for their courage during a German raid on the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station.
The coin was part of the «Anzacs Remembered» series by the Royal Australian Mint and News Corp newspapers, with a mintage of 314,515. The obverse shows the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
UNC condition in the original souvenir coin card: never circulated, no wear, mint lustre intact. It is one of the few coins in the series to feature a woman, and it is especially well suited to a medicine-on-coins collection.
Besides this coin, VPcoins offers other issues from the same era and region.
