The mounted gaucho is the best-known figure of the Argentine pampas, and he takes the whole obverse of the 1963 10 pesos. Catalogues call the design «el gaucho resero»: a resero was a drover who moved cattle over long distances. Beneath the rider runs REPUBLICA ARGENTINA.
The coin belongs to the last decade of the peso moneda nacional, the currency Argentina had used since 1881. The gaucho type was struck from 1962 to 1968 in nickel-clad steel. The reverse has a laurel branch beside the value 10 PESOS and the date.
On 1 January 1970 the peso moneda nacional was replaced by a new peso at a hundred to one, and the gaucho coins left circulation. This piece fits a date run of the 1962–1968 type and a topical set of horses and riders on coins.
Grade F-VF: the coin saw long use and the high points are smoothed, but the silhouette of the rider, the horse, the legend and the value are all legible.
A coin in a collection is a reason to learn more about history, and the VPcoins catalogue offers many such reasons.
