Two presidents on one note: with this «two-portrait» 1,000 kwanzas the National Bank of Angola continued in the 1980s a series begun in 1984. The front shows Agostinho Neto, the country's first president, in the foreground, and behind him José Eduardo dos Santos, who succeeded him in 1979 and led Angola until 2017.
The back is military: it shows armed soldiers and the national coat of arms. In 1987 the country was deep in civil war, and an army scene on the highest denomination captures the period more precisely than any textbook.
The type appeared with two dates, 1984 and 1987; the 1987 note is listed in the Pick catalogue as variety P121b.
For an Angola collection this is a key piece of the «two-portrait» series of 1984–1987, with its military reverse; beside the 1979 thousand featuring Neto alone it shows how the look of Angolan money changed. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
VPcoins brings coins and banknotes from all over the world together in one catalogue.
