Near Manaus in Brazil, researchers watched a margay imitate the calls of pied tamarins to lure the small monkeys within reach. Vocal mimicry of this kind is rare among wild cats and sets the margay apart among the predators of the American tropics.
It looks like an ocelot, but is smaller, with a longer tail and strikingly large dark eyes. The margay is a forest cat through and through, ranging from the lowlands of Mexico through Central America to Uruguay and northern Argentina and feeding on small mammals, birds and reptiles. Deforestation and fragmentation of its habitat have put it on the IUCN Red List as Near Threatened.
This 2013 Fiji 2 dollars honours the margay in the Wild Cat series. Containing one ounce of .999 silver and struck in proof, the coin has a mirror field, with the arms of Fiji on the obverse.
