The Somali is the longhaired branch of the Abyssinian. The name came from the American breeder Evelyn Mague, who set out to develop longhaired kittens from Abyssinian lines as a breed in their own right. The Cat Fanciers' Association granted the Somali championship status in 1979.
Ruddy is one of the recognised colours, a golden brown ground ticked with black so that dark and light bands alternate along every hair. Cinnamon, called sorrel by some clubs, is recognised as well, and both show off the shimmer that ticking gives the coat.
On this 2013 Fiji 2 dollars the Somali represents the Fluffy Cat series, a natural home for a breed defined by its long coat. The mintage is 5,000; the coin contains one ounce of .999 silver and was struck in proof. The obverse reads FIJI 2013, with the motto of Fiji and the 2 DOLLARS denomination.
