The Olympiad number on this coin has an unexpected ancient echo. The four-horse chariot race, the quadriga, entered the programme of the ancient Olympic Games in 680 BC, at the 25th Olympiad. The Barcelona Games of 1992 were the XXV Olympiad too, and the quadriga appeared on one of the silver coins in the final series of Spain's Olympic programme.
Under a ministerial order published in the BOE on 30 January 1992, the second coin of the fourth series received a quadriga modelled on an ancient coin, flanked by the Games emblem and «XXV Olimpiada Barcelona 1992»; King Juan Carlos I and Prince Felipe share the face dated 1992.
The ancient four-horse race was a test of endurance, with the chariots covering twelve laps of the hippodrome.
Uncirculated (UNC), it was never handled in circulation. For collectors of classical motifs on modern coins it shows a Greek subject returning to Olympic silver some twenty-seven centuries later.
