In 2016 New Caledonia received 720,000 new 100 franc coins, the denomination that had replaced the banknote of the same value forty years earlier and had long since become the archipelago’s highest circulating coin.
Raymond Joly’s design had not changed since 1976. The reverse shows a Kanak hut among Cook pines and a palm, with the denomination and «NOUVELLE CALEDONIE»; the obverse carries a capped Marianne in profile and the letters «I E O M» of the overseas issuing institute. The 2016 coins belong to the later aluminium bronze type, KM# 15a, struck from 2006.
This issue did not circulate for long: in September 2021 the IEOM introduced a coin range common to New Caledonia, French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna, and from 1 June 2022 the old 100 franc coins lost their legal tender status.
For a date run of the 100 francs, 2016 is one of the type’s last years. AU-UNC grade: traces of circulation are minimal, no more than light rub on the highest points of the relief, and the lustre is almost fully preserved.
Numismatics begins with a single coin and continues in the VPcoins catalogue.
