The 50 drachmai of 1964 is devoted to the sea: on the left of the front is the head of the nymph Arethusa from an ancient coin, and at the lower right an ancient galley. The note is dated 1 October 1964.
The back continues the maritime theme, combining an old and a modern shipyard in a single composition. Held to the light, the note shows a watermark of the head of the Antikythera Ephebe, a bronze statue of a youth.
The note was printed at the Bank of Greece’s own works (IETA), which gave each denomination its own theme and colour. The governor’s signature is that of Xenophon Zolotas.
For a «ships and the sea» collection it is a coherent piece, with a galley, shipyards and a sea nymph on one note; in a Greece collection it opens the 1964–1970 series. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
