The Reserve Bank of India began introducing the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series in November 2016, with colours, sizes and a theme different from the previous Gandhi series. The theme is India's heritage: the front carries Mahatma Gandhi's portrait and the Ashoka Pillar capital, and the back of each denomination shows a landmark of its own.
The reverse shows the Ellora Caves. Ellora is a complex of rock-cut temples and monasteries of three religions at once — Buddhist, Hindu and Jain. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The most interesting security features are a see-through register — the denominational numeral comes together against the light from halves on the front and the back and a windowed demetalised security thread with the inscriptions «भारत» and RBI.
Each denomination is a separate monument of India's heritage, so the series belongs both in a country collection and in an «architecture on money» theme set; within a denomination it is collected by year of printing and Governor's signature. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
