The Pobjoy Mint's Isle of Man cat series reached the Ragdoll in 2007, nearly two decades after it began with the Manx in 1988. This example is a 1/20 ounce gold proof, with Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Elizabeth II on the obverse.
The breed was developed in Riverside, California, in the 1960s by Ann Baker, starting from Josephine, a white non-pedigree longhaired cat who had her first kittens in 1963. Baker said Josephine went limp when held, and the name Ragdoll comes from that relaxed, floppy habit.
Every Ragdoll carries the colourpoint gene, so the body is lighter than the face, ears, legs and tail, and the large oval eyes are a vivid blue. It is one of the larger breeds, with mature males reaching twenty pounds or more. The CFA accepted Ragdolls for registration in 1993 and for championship in 2000.
