The fifth coin in the Pobjoy Mint's Isle of Man cat series, dated 1992, portrays the Siamese. Elizabeth II appears on the obverse in the effigy by Ian Rank-Broadley, and this example is a 1/20 ounce gold proof.
The breed comes from Thailand, the former Siam, and its ancestors already appear in the Tamra Maew, a collection of Thai cat poems thought to date from the Ayutthaya kingdom. The first Siamese known in the United States was a gift to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878.
The famous pattern is a temperature-sensitive form of albinism: pigment darkens only on the cooler extremities, so the mask, ears, legs and tail contrast with a pale body. Blue almond-shaped eyes and an unusually wide vocal range complete the picture. The cat series itself has introduced a different breed every year since 1988.
