The 500,000 drachmai of spring 1944 is an occupation note of the Bank of Greece with the head of Zeus, the thunderer of Olympus. The back has no scene: frames, guilloches, rosettes and ears of wheat around the value.
Variety P126b is distinguished by the series letters placed after the number.
Such notes are direct witnesses of the occupation hyperinflation: the Bank of Greece records that, because of «galloping inflation», huge denominations were printed during the war by various lithographers in the country, the last one, of 100 billion drachmas, on 5 November 1944. A few days later a law set one new drachma equal to 50 billion old ones.
In a Greece collection the note fills the half-million slot, the step between 100,000 and the million-drachma notes of summer 1944. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
Banknotes from the VPcoins catalogue are collected by seasoned collectors and newcomers alike.
