«السودان مصدر غذاء العالم», «Sudan, the food source of the world»: on the 1976 5 millim this FAO slogan surrounds the state emblem with the secretary bird. The coin was issued in 1976 in a mintage of 7,868,000 and struck once more in 1978.

The secretary bird with a shield on its breast is Sudan’s emblem, chosen as a distinctly national symbol; the scrolls at its sides carry the motto and the state name, with the dates 1976 and 1396 AH between them. The reverse carries the value «٥ مليمات» and the legend «جمهورية السودان الديمقراطية».

The FAO coin programme, in which countries issued coins calling for the fight against hunger, began in 1968, and in 1976 Sudan brought a whole range of small denominations into it. For the 5 millim this type proved to be the last: after 1978 Sudan struck no more 5 millim coins.

VF-AU grade sits between Very Fine and About Uncirculated: there are traces of circulation, but wear has touched mainly the highest points, and the bird’s feathers, the shield and the Arabic legends keep their clarity.

A collection can grow in any direction, and the VPcoins catalogue has options for each of them.
