El Salvador 1 centavo 1972
A 1 centavo coin issued in 1972 (part of the mintage struck in 1973) by the Central Reserve Bank of El Salvador as a standard circulating coin. It was minted at the San Francisco Mint (USA). The mintage was about 20 million pieces.
On the obverse is a bust of Francisco Morazán facing left. Around the rim is the inscription “REPÚBLICA DE EL SALVADOR” and the year “1972”.
On the reverse in the center is the denomination “1 CENTAVO”, surrounded by a laurel wreath.
The coin reflects the period of use of the colón in El Salvador and perpetuates the image of Francisco Morazán — a national hero of Central America, one of the leaders of the struggle for independence and regional unification in the 19th century. This design for low denominations remained almost unchanged from 1942 to 1972.
