A pineapple and the motto FOOD FOR ALL: in 1975 Swaziland's smallest denomination became a commemorative coin of the programme run by FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
What sets it apart from the ordinary first-series cent is the inscription above the plant: the design of a pineapple with its fruit between value and date is kept, but the FAO motto is added on top. The coin is twelve-sided, struck in bronze, with the head of King Sobhuza II on the obverse; British medallist Michael Rizzello engraved both sides.
The mintage was 2,500,000. A curious detail: although dated 1975, the entire run was struck by the Royal Mint at Llantrisant back in 1974.
In UNC grade the coin never circulated: there is no wear and the mint lustre remains. It belongs in an FAO thematic collection, a set of plants on coins, or a Swaziland date run from the reign of Sobhuza II.
Coins from the VPcoins catalogue are collected by seasoned numismatists and newcomers alike.
