The two stalks of sugar cane were inherited from Swaziland's coins, but the name on the obverse of this 10 cents is new: ESWATINI. In April 2018 the country's official English name changed from Kingdom of Swaziland to Kingdom of eSwatini, mirroring the name used in the Swazi language.
King Mswati III announced the change on his fiftieth birthday, in the fiftieth year of independence, restoring the pre-colonial name. His portrait is on the obverse; the reverse shows the cane, value and date.
The 10 cents is one of seven denominations in the Central Bank of Eswatini's current range, from 5 cents to 5 emalangeni. When it renewed the coinage in 2016, the bank listed counterfeit protection and ease of use for visually impaired people among its goals.
In UNC grade the coin never circulated: there is no wear and the mint lustre is intact. In a country collection it opens the chapter of Eswatini, a state that changed its name on the half-century of its independence.
