A crescent and four five-pointed stars, one for each island of the archipelago, fill one side of the Comoros 10 francs of 1992, with the name of the issuing bank set above them in Arabic script.
The other side speaks French: a large denomination, the date and the circular legend «BANQUE CENTRALE DES COMORES». Two scripts on a single coin became the Comorian norm after independence in 1975; before that, the inscriptions were in French only.
The coin was struck by the Paris Mint, which produces all of the Comoros’ circulating coinage. Two tiny marks flank the date: a cornucopia, the mint’s own mark, and a dolphin, the personal mark of chief engraver Émile Rousseau. This yellow-alloy type carries a single date, 1992; in 2001 it gave way to a smaller steel coin.
AU-UNC is the step between AU and UNC: there is practically no sign of circulation, at most faint rubbing on the very highest points of the relief, and the mint lustre is almost entirely intact. For a one-date type, it is a neat way to fill the Comoros slot with a near mint-state example.
VPcoins is a shop for those who collect coins with purpose: by country, by series and by era.
