An Arabic legend beside the English one and a double date, Hijri and Gregorian, set this 2019 Somaliland set apart at once from the circulation coins of 1994–2005, which were inscribed in Latin script only.
All five coins share a side with the national emblem and the bilingual legend «جمهورية أرض الصومال» and «REPUBLIC OF SOMALILAND» with the years «١٤٤٠» and 2019. The other side is devoted to land and sea: a gazelle on the 1 shilling, a hippopotamus and a sea turtle on the two 5 shillings, a ship on the two 10 shillings. The Krause catalogue lists the two ship coins as separate types, KM# 131 and KM# 132.
According to Numista these are non-circulating coins made for collectors: unlike the issues of 1994–2005, they were never used in payments.
The set suits collectors of modern Somaliland, of maritime themes or of coins dated in the Hijri calendar. All coins are UNC: no trace of circulation, mint lustre intact.
More coins from this country and this era are waiting in the VPcoins catalogue.
