1994 is the last year of Malawi’s 2 tambala bearing the portrait of Hastings Kamuzu Banda: that same year the founding president’s term came to an end, and new designs soon followed on the coinage.
The obverse shows Banda in profile with the inscription «MALAŴI»; the reverse shows the long-tailed paradise whydah dividing the date and the value «2 TAMBALA». Both designs are by the medallist Paul Vincze and had remained unchanged since 1971.
The coin belongs to the copper-plated steel version (KM# 8.2a), struck from 1984 to 1994, and closes that run. In a collection by ruler it marks the end of the Banda era; in a thematic one it adds another African bird on a coin.
Grade AU-UNC: little or no trace of circulation, with the fine details of the plumage and the portrait sharp and the mint lustre retained.
VPcoins brings coins and banknotes from all over the world together in one catalogue.
