When the 1000 som entered circulation on 26 December 2022, the building on the coin was still under construction: the Center of Islamic Civilization in Tashkent opened only in March 2026. The coin itself became the first bimetallic circulating coin since the som was introduced in 1994.
The idea of the centre was put forward in 2017, and it was built next to the Hazrati Imam ensemble on a site of about 10 hectares. It is devoted to the country’s ancient history and its contribution to world civilisation, and its chief relic is the Quran of Uthman, kept in the Hall of the Holy Quran.
On the building side the denomination «1000» is rendered in incuse numerals with «soʻm» below in Latin letters. The other side shows the state emblem of Uzbekistan, the Central Bank’s legend around it and, below the emblem, 2022, the year the design was approved. The coin is two-coloured: a yellow centre set in a white nickel-plated ring.
The coin was introduced alongside the 1000 som banknote of the 2001 series, which remains legal tender. Islamic heritage is no new theme for Tashkent: in 2007 ISESCO named it the capital of Islamic culture.
Grade UNC: the coin has never circulated, there is no wear and the mint lustre remains; only minor marks from storage in bank bags are acceptable. For an Islam-and-architecture collection or a run of modern Uzbek coins, it is a piece whose subject was completed only after the coin was issued.
VPcoins offers coins for numismatists with all kinds of interests, from history to modern design.
