The last evidence of tigers in Cambodia’s forests dates from 2007, and in 2016 the government declared them functionally extinct: the 2023 «LOST TIGERS OF CAMBODIA» silver ounce is dedicated to exactly that loss.
The reverse shows an Indochinese tiger framed by forest foliage, with the inscriptions «LOST TIGERS OF CAMBODIA» and «1 OZ 999 FINE SILVER». The obverse belongs to Angkor Wat, the largest temple complex in the world by area, with the legend «KINGDOM OF CAMBODIA» and a face value of 3000 riels.
The series began in 2022 as the first bullion programme on Cambodian legal tender, and the 2023 coin continues it with a new date. Tigers once lived in the country’s eastern forests, in Mondulkiri and Virachey National Park, and in 2023 Cambodia and India signed a memorandum on bringing tigers back to the Cardamom Mountains.
An ounce of 999 fine silver is the core of the coin’s value, while the riel face value makes it legal tender of the kingdom. UNC: the coin has never circulated, and the tiger and temple show no wear.
