François-Joseph Bosio was born on the Rock of Monaco on 19 March 1768 and went on to become one of the leading French sculptors of the Napoleonic and Restoration eras. At sixteen his talent for modelling clay caught the eye of Prince Honoré III, who sent him to Paris, where he spent two years in the studio of Augustin Pajou.
His Paris career produced bas-reliefs for the Vendôme Column, a series of busts of the imperial family, the equestrian statue of Louis XIV in the Place des Victoires and the quadriga crowning the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. Under the Restoration he was named Premier Sculpteur du Roi. He died in Paris in 1845.
For his 250th anniversary Monaco issued this 2 euro commemorative, KM# 207, showing Bosio with a statue behind him and the legend 1768 – SCULPTEUR – 2018. The European Central Bank gives an issue volume of 16,000 and a June 2018 release, the same month the Prince's Palace opened an exhibition devoted to the sculptor. Struck by the Monnaie de Paris in proof quality, with a mirror field behind the frosted portrait.
