For the Berlin Mint, 1937 was the first year of the 2 Reichsmark with the portrait of Paul von Hindenburg: in 1936 the type was struck only in Munich, Muldenhütten, Karlsruhe and Hamburg. The letter A on the coin is the Berlin mint mark.
Hindenburg’s right-facing profile is framed by the legend PAUL VON HINDENBURG 1847-1934; the portrait is by sculptor and medallist Alfred Vocke. The reverse, by Franz Paul Krischker, shows the state eagle with a wreath and swastika, the legend DEUTSCHES REICH, the date and the value 2 REICHS MARK.
Hindenburg won fame with the victory at Tannenberg in 1914, was elected Reich President in 1925 and held the office until his death on 2 August 1934; on 30 January 1933 he appointed Adolf Hitler Reich Chancellor.
The type was struck in 1936–1939, and from 1938 also in Vienna (B). The Berlin coin of 1937 opens the A branch of a set by mint and year.
The F-VF grade sits between Fine and Very Fine: the coin has circulated, wear is clear and the high points are smoothed, yet the portrait, the eagle and the legends remain readable.
