This Hamburg 2 Reichsmark of 1937 with the portrait of Paul von Hindenburg belongs to the last year in which the type was struck only by the six mints A, D, E, F, G and J: from 1938 Vienna joined them with the mark B. The letter J is the mark of the Hamburg Mint.
Hindenburg is shown in profile facing right, encircled by PAUL VON HINDENBURG 1847-1934. The reverse bears the state eagle with a wreath and swastika, the legend DEUTSCHES REICH, the date and the value 2 REICHS MARK. The portrait is by Alfred Vocke and the eagle by Franz Paul Krischker; the edge reads GEMEINNUTZ GEHT VOR EIGENNUTZ.
A native of Posen, Hindenburg won fame at Tannenberg in 1914, became Reich President in 1925 and on 30 January 1933 appointed Adolf Hitler Reich Chancellor. He died on 2 August 1934, so the coin is posthumous.
Hamburg struck this type from the very start, in 1936, through to 1939. The J coin fills the Hamburg slot in a date run by mint.
The F-VF grade sits between Fine and Very Fine: the coin has circulated, wear is clear and the high points are smoothed, yet the portrait, the eagle and the legends remain readable.
At VPcoins you will find coins for a collection, for a gift, or simply for the pleasure of owning them.
