The portrait of Paul von Hindenburg on this 2 Reichsmark of 1937 is the work of sculptor and medallist Alfred Vocke, while the state eagle on the reverse was designed by Franz Paul Krischker. The letter D identifies the Munich Mint, one of the four that began striking the type as early as 1936.
Hindenburg is shown in profile facing right with the legend PAUL VON HINDENBURG 1847-1934. The eagle holds a wreath with a swastika, with DEUTSCHES REICH and the date below and the value 2 REICHS MARK at the sides. The edge bears the inscription GEMEINNUTZ GEHT VOR EIGENNUTZ.
Hindenburg was born on 2 October 1847 in Posen and died on 2 August 1934 at Neudeck. He was Reich President from 1925 and on 30 January 1933 appointed Adolf Hitler Reich Chancellor.
This 2 Reichsmark type was issued in 1936–1939; in 1937 Berlin and Stuttgart joined Munich, Muldenhütten, Karlsruhe and Hamburg. The Munich example fills the D slot in a set by mint.
The F-VF grade sits between Fine and Very Fine: the coin has circulated, wear is clear and the high points are smoothed, yet the portrait, the eagle and the legends remain readable.
