The letter A on this 1938 two-mark piece identifies the Berlin mint, first mentioned in records in 1280 and using this letter on its coins since 1750.
The design honours Paul von Hindenburg: his right-facing profile is by Alfred Vocke, surrounded by PAUL VON HINDENBURG 1847-1934. The other side is taken by the state eagle holding a wreath with a swastika, by Franz Paul Krischker, above DEUTSCHES REICH and the date, with the value 2 REICHS MARK divided in two.
The dates on the coin are Hindenburg’s lifespan. The victor of Tannenberg in 1914, he was elected Reich President in 1925, re-elected in 1932 and on 30 January 1933 appointed Adolf Hitler Reich Chancellor; he died on 2 August 1934.
Berlin only joined production of the type in 1937, and by 1938 it was working alongside six other mints, Vienna among them. The edge lettering GEMEINNUTZ GEHT VOR EIGENNUTZ completes the piece. A Berlin coin of 1938 fills its place in a set of two-mark pieces by mint and year.
F-VF describes a circulated coin with wear between the Fine and Very Fine grades: the high points are smoothed, while the portrait, the eagle and the legends are clear to read.
Besides this coin, VPcoins offers other issues from the same era and region.
