Six denominations from 1 to 50 ariary in one set: the full line of coins of the currency that became Madagascar’s only money on 1 January 2005. The set contains coins of different issue years within 1996–2016.
Each denomination entered circulation in its own era. The 10 and 20 ariary coins appeared as early as 1978, the 5 and 50 ariary in 1992, and the smallest, 1 and 2 ariary, only in 2003–2004, on the eve of the final farewell to the franc. One set therefore brings together several generations of the Malagasy coinage.
The smallest coin of the set, the 1 ariary, keeps the franc design: the poinsettia, the island’s floral emblem, and the value between the horns of a zebu head. The ariary itself is one of only two circulating currencies with a non-decimal division: it is notionally split into five iraimbilanja, and its name goes back to the Spanish real, the silver dollar.
AU-UNC grade: the coins show almost no signs of circulation, with only light rubbing possible on the high points of the relief. In one step the set fills the circulating ariary range from 1 to 50 in a Madagascar collection.
