A dragon soaring above a river, a sailing boat and the castle of Breno below form the final scene of the «Landscapes and Legends» series, to which Switzerland devoted four silver 20 francs coins in 1994-1996. This 1996 coin closed the cycle after the Devil’s Bridge, the Rhaetian Snake Queen and Gargantua the giant.
Breno is a village in the upper Malcantone, in the canton of Ticino, on the right bank of the Magliasina. A castle there is mentioned in 1516 and ruins of the fortifications survive; since 2005 Breno has been part of the municipality of Alto Malcantone.
The design is by the Zurich medallist Peter Emch, author of the whole series, whose signature EMCH appears on the reverse. The dragon flies to the right, the boat sails along the river towards the castle, and mountains rise behind. The value side has a large cross with 20 FR, CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA, 1996 and the letter B, while the edge carries the Latin motto DOMINUS PROVIDEBIT, «The Lord will provide».
An example of this coin is held in the Münzkabinett of the Berlin State Museums. UNC grade: the coin has never circulated, shows no wear and keeps its mint lustre; only minor handling marks are acceptable.
Besides this coin, VPcoins offers other issues from the same era and region.
