Three coins of 2006, the 50 tetri, 1 lari and 2 lari, make up the whole second generation of Georgian coins, in which the state coat of arms replaced the symbolism of the 1993 series.
The arms adopted in 2004 appear on all three: Saint George on a silver horse slaying the dragon, the shield beneath the Georgian crown held by two golden lions, and the motto «ძალა ერთობაშია» («Strength is in unity») on the ribbon. On the 50 tetri and 1 lari the arms fill the field; on the bimetallic 2 lari they occupy the centre, while the reverse of the top coin surrounds the denomination with sun rays.
The highlight of the set is the 2 lari: a copper-aluminium-nickel centre in a cupronickel ring, and a micro-element on both sides, a tiny lion’s head recalling the ancient coins of Colchis. All three have reeded edges lettered «საქართველო» and «GEORGIA». The first issues of each denomination came from different mints: the 50 tetri from the Austrian Mint, the 1 lari from the Royal Dutch Mint and the 2 lari from the Royal Mint in Britain.
Coins of this generation are still in circulation, so the set shows Georgia’s modern money exactly as people handle it today. For a Caucasus collection, it provides the entire new generation of denominations at once, in matching condition.
Uncirculated (UNC): the coins have never circulated, show no wear and keep their mint lustre.
