This 2012 silver medal marks the 775th anniversary of Berlin, a jubilee counted from 1237. That was the year Cölln, Berlin’s twin town, first appeared in the records.
Berlin itself is first mentioned in 1244, seven years after its neighbour; in time the two settlements merged into one city. That is why 1237 is taken as the founding year, and in 2012 Berlin celebrated 775 years.
The city’s symbol, a black bear standing on its hind legs, has long held its place on the Berlin coat of arms. The medal fits a themed collection on Berlin and its anniversaries, alongside commemorative coins and medals devoted to the German capital.
It is a medal, not a coin: it has no face value and was issued as a commemorative collector’s piece. UNC grade means the medal shows no wear and keeps its original surface lustre; only minor storage marks are possible.
At VPcoins numismatic items are chosen both for collections and as gifts.
