The medal «40 Years of the GDR — Youth Culture» is devoted to the anniversary the German Democratic Republic celebrated on 7 October 1989, in the last autumn of its existence. On the eve of the celebrations the Free German Youth held a torchlight parade, and on the anniversary itself, not far from the official festivities in Berlin, thousands took to the streets to demand freedom.
Eleven days later Erich Honecker resigned, on 9 November the Berlin Wall fell, and on 3 October 1990 the GDR ceased to exist. The medal is a private commemorative issue in silver, not a state award or a coin; it belongs to the «40 Years of the GDR» series covering different sides of life in the country.
Grade UNC: no wear, with the surface in its original state.
